The Grief Center of Southwest Colorado serves residents

of Southwest Colorado by offering the following:



  • A network of bereavement specialists in Southwest Colorado (Spanish-speaking therapist available)

  • Individual and group therapy for children, teens and adults experiencing a loss in their lives

  • Support groups for bereaved individuals

  • Special programs for bereaved children and their families.

  • Pre- and neo-natal loss support

  • Community resources on grief, loss and trauma-informed care

  • Assistance with memorial service planning and facilitation





We are dedicated to providing the highest standard of professional service while remaining respectful, non-judgmental, and empathetic. We provide a warm, caring, and therapeutic environment for our clients.








In 2017, The Grief Center of Southwest Colorado:
​
  • Provided more than 800 hours of individual and small group therapy, serving 70+ bereaved clients within our offices, including clients from Pagosa Springs, Alamosa, Dolores, Silverton, Farmington, NM; and Moab, Utah
  • Provided both immediate and ongoing support for Escalante Middle School after the death of a student by suicide
  • Provided on-site bereavement services for students, parents and staff at Park Elementary after the death of a teacher by suicide through the year anniversary
  • Provided both immediate and ongoing support for Aztec and Farmington communities after the tragic school shooting on December 12.
  • Participated in community suicide prevention efforts, including talks given at 9-R’s District Accountability Advisory Committee, the Suicide Prevention Community Summit, the “You Are Enough” event on the FLC campus, and participation in the La Plata and Archuleta Counties Suicide Prevention Task Forces
  • Provided training in bereavement support for La Plata Youth Services Radical Possibility mentors, the Boys and Girls Clubs, and 9-R school counselors
  • Provided counseling supervision for professional counselors and counseling interns
  • Received the Martin Family Fund grant and was chosen as a recipient of Purgatory Local’s Benefit Days

In 2018, we have:

  • Provided weekly grief groups at Durango High School
  • Provided peer training at La Plata Youth Services
  • Provided grief groups and educational services at the Boys and Girls Club of La Plata County
  • Provided continued support in Aztec and Farmington after the school shootings in December 2017
  • Served on a panel sponsored by the Southern Ute Headstart on grief in children
  • Provided support at the Mental Health Mardi Gras (sponsored by the CODY project)
  • Provided support after the Kevin Hines event at FLC
  • Supplied newsletter articles and educational materials on grief to Sunshine Gardens Assisted Living
  • Provided support to the Bayfield and Ignacio school counselors and community after three youth suicides
  • Provided support for community members affected by the 416 Fire
  • Received a Ballantine Family Grant for work with bereaved youth
  • Provided support to locally owned businesses after a death
 
In addition, The Grief Center of Southwest Colorado supports the community in the following ongoing ways:
  • Ongoing grief and crisis support to the Durango, Bayfield, Mancos and Ignacio school districts, and private schools in the tri-county area (EAP provider for 9-R employees)
  • Community partner with the Boys and Girls Clubs of America through Be There Grief and Bereavement Initiative: Durango, Farmington and Aztec
  • Community partner with La Plata Youth Services
  • Community partner with Durango Arts Center
  • Consulting and grief support to the Southern Ute Tribe’s Public Education Department and the Southern Ute Headstart
  • Grief counseling and support services for parents of children with mental health needs
  • Member of the La Plata County Suicide Prevention Coalition
  • Ongoing support and provision of meeting space for peer-led groups including Grief Recovery After Substance Passing (GRASP) and Heartbeat, La Plata County’s peer support group for survivors of suicide
  • Supervision and training of counseling professionals
  • Support groups for caregivers and mental health professionals
  • Internship opportunities for students at Denver University, Fort Lewis College and Animas High School
  • Services provided for the Fort Lewis College Counseling Center, Mercy Regional Hospital, 9-R school district counselors, teachers and staff, La Plata Youth Services, Robert DeNier Youth Services Center, local First Responders and Victim’s Advocate services, local churches and religious organizations, the Rainbow Youth Coalition, the Prejudice Elimination Action Team, and peer counseling groups at Durango High School and Animas High School
  • GCSWC maintains a website and library with updated resources and blogs about dealing with death specific to our community
