​The Grief Center of Southwest Colorado serves residents
of Southwest Colorado by offering the following:

 
  • A network of bereavement specialists 
  • Individual and group therapy for children, teens and adults experiencing a loss in their lives, including traumatic loss, using multi-modal interventions
  • School based grief counseling
  • Therapeutic support groups for bereaved individuals
  • Special programs for bereaved children and their families
  • Summer grief camps for children and adolescents
  • Parenting programs
  • Peer support groups for survivors of suicide and substance-related deaths
  • Pre- and neo-natal loss support
  • Anticipatory grief services
  • Community resources and organizational workshops on grief, loss and trauma-informed care
  • On-call intervention response for schools and community organizations
  • Resource library with books, films, audio and written materials to share




We are dedicated to providing the highest standard of professional service while remaining respectful, non-judgmental, and empathetic. We provide a warm, caring, and therapeutic environment for our clients.

In 2021, The Grief Center of Southwest Colorado:

  • Counseled 1800+ private clients through individual and group grief counseling sessions (more than a 4-fold increase since 2020)
  • Contracted five grief specialists
  • Trained and supervised five graduate school interns
  • Continued Virtual Therapy Services after a successful pivot in 2020 in response to the pandemic
  • Collaborated with La Plata Youth Services providing on-site school counseling for at risk bereaved students
  • Offered on-site grief therapy for vulnerable elders at Cottonwood, Sunshine Gardens
  • Provided grief support to local businesses and schools after loss (3 business, 5 school districts)
  • Expanded services in Rural La Plata County per 2020-2021 strategic plan initiatives
  • Offered in-person Summer Grief Camps for Elementary and Middle School Students 
  • Started an ongoing grief group for bereaved parents (loss of spouse) of young children
  • Facilitated GRASP (Grief Recovery After Substance Passing) monthly meetings
  • Designed a Teen Mentor Program
  • Was named a Childhood Bereavement Changemaker by the New York Life Foundation and the JAG Institute and contributed to gathering regional data on childhood bereavement as part of this national effort
  • Collaborated with San Juan Basin Health and the CODY Project to offer International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day programming.
  • Was awarded a grant by WPSU to create and deliver a public radio series about grief in collaboration with KSUT and KDUR
  • Supported Colorado residents affected by the mass shooting in Boulder
